It's often said that Gypsy is the greatest American musical, and one that could stand on its own even without its songs.

Why See Gypsy?

Let them entertain you!

Gypsy is one of the great American musicals. With music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, if was first staged in 1959, premiering on Broadway two years after Sondheim's previous masterpiece, West Side Story. It was praised not only for its score, bursting with instantly iconic numbers like Everything is Coming Up Roses, but also its characterisation and real drama. The role of the domineering matriarch Rose in particular is now considered one of the juiciest in musical theater, and has won three separate actresses a Tony Award.

Pittsburgh CLO, one of the country's most prestigious non-profit theaters, is sure to bring this production to life with customary aplomb. The company's last production of Gypsy was back in 1997, starring Broadway veteran Jo Anne Worley in the role of Rose.

What is Gypsy About?

Gypsy is based on the life of Gypsy Rosy Lee, a burlesque dancer and later movie star during the 1930s and 1940s. The action revolves around her rise to fame and her stormy relationship with her mother Rose, who becomes an increasingly desperate figure as her daughter's renown, and the independence it brings, increases.
