Why See La Bayadere?

Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre presents:

A long time ago in Imperial India, a young couple have promised themselves to each other for eternity. But life has other plans for Solor, the warrior and Nikiya, La Bayadere, or court dancer. Solor has been chosen as the husband for the Rajah's daughter, and Nikiya has caught the eye of The High Brahmin. When Nikiya is forced unknowingly at a celebration for Solor's impeding nuptials, the Rajah hatches a fatal plan that sends Nikiya far from the mortal realm, to the mystical Kingdom of the Shades.

The dreamlike nature of La Bayadere has made it into one of ballet's most emotional and moving pieces. Created by the legendary choregrapher Pepita and with a score by Ludwig Minkus it played its first performance in St Petersburg, Russia in 1877 and has become a classic in any company's cannon.
