Better is a witty fool, than a foolish wit...
One of Shakespeare's frothiest concoctions, Twelfth Night is a gender-bending comedy full of larger than life characters and romantic misunderstandings a-plenty. One of the Bard's most widely performed works, it's also been adapted for the silver screen many times, including a 1996 film starring Helena Bonham Carter and Ben Kingsley. This Pubic Theater production stars Gretchen Egolf in the role of Olivia, and is directed by Ted Pappas.
Twelfth Night follows twins Viola and Sebastian who are separated when their ship is wrecked off the coast of Illyria. Viola is washed ashore, and presuming Sebastian dead, disguises herself as a man and enters the service of the island's Duke Orsnio. It's the beginning of a series of comic mishaps and misunderstandings, as all the characters (involving the wonderfully pompous servant Malvolio) fall for someone who isn't quite who they appear to be.
