Exploring Pittsburgh’s Cultural District

Author KevinKevin, January 31st, 2024

Travel to the heart of Pittsburgh, and you'll discover more than just steel and bridges!

Welcome to the Cultural District! This marvelous cluster encompasses world-class theaters, art galleries, expansive parks, and some of the world's tastiest restaurants. If you're a theater enthusiast, you're in for a treat, as the district presents a staggering 1,500 shows for you to enjoy. It's no wonder that it attracts 2 million patrons each year. Will you be one of them? Of course you will!

A Brief History

The towering and sparkly Cultural District that we love and know today took shape in the early 1980s after finding its roots in the industrial trade. Eventually, the district underwent a complete metamorphosis, becoming the go-to destination for all your entertainment needs. It transformed from an industrial hub, initially built on the foundations of the city's industrial identity, into a seamless integration of historic structures with contemporary spaces. The Cultural District is now a fusion of Pittsburgh's past and present - and it's not just a cultural hotspot; it's also a great day out for the whole family!

Which Theaters Are In The Cultural District?

No matter where you go in The Cultural District, you'll be spoiled for choice when it comes to venues. Magnificent buildings, each with a magical history, and a wide assortment of shows await you. The Benedum Center on 7th Street is a complete jaw-dropper of a building with grand architecture that hosts larger-than-life Broadway productions.

There's also Heinz Hall, a cozy spot known for hosting the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and Byham Theater, which sets the scene for avant-garde performances and intimate, up-close moments. Together, these theaters turn the district into a bustling hub for the performing arts.

What Is Currently Playing In the Cultural District?

Chang chang changitty chang sha-bop - there are plenty of regulars for you to catch in the Cultural District, and Grease is one of them! You can dance, you can jive to the ABBA-infused sounds of Mamma Mia!, and if you fancy a sherry, sherry baby, then perhaps Jersey Boys is the show for you. Check out what's currently happening in Pittsburgh for more!
