Disney's Tarzan returns to the Byham for 2017
Four years after its Pittsburgh premiere in 2013, Disney's Tarzan The Musical returns to the Byham Theater in spring 2017 in all its green, lush glory. Based on the 1999 animated movie, follow the wild man as he grows up within his adopted gorilla clan to adulthood, and confronting his identity when he happens upon a group of explorers. With original tunes composed by Phil Collins and a book by Tony-winning playwright David Henry Hwang, this is one thrilling adventure where you will follow your heart.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Shipwrecked and later orphaned in the Congo jungle by a ferocious leopard Sabor, a human baby is discovered by Kala, a grieving gorilla who lost her child to the same cat. Returning him to the troop, Tarzan is reluctantly accepted into the family, however he feels like an outcast due to his very different appearance, albeit helped along by his friends, the outrageous Terk, and germaphobic elephant Tantor. After saving the leader Kerchak from Sabor once and for all, he finally feels like part of the family; however, his real adventure is about to begin.
A group of English explorers in search of gorillas have arrived; the elderly yet excitable Professor, his beautiful, kind daughter Jane and sinister hunter Clayton. When their worlds collide, Tarzan learns about where he really came from, and his heart is torn between self-discovery and loyalty to his gorilla family. However, when Clayton's true intention to capture gorillas is revealed, he must make a choice that will set his life course forever.
Complete with a lush set, awesome choreography and a soaring soundtrack provided by Collins including You'll Be in My Heart" as well as "Son of Man" and "Two Worlds", find yourself transported to the jungle for an adventure that explores the true meaning of family.
