Enjoy a little "night music" as part of closing weekend..."
As part of its closing weekend, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's incumbent musical director Manfred Honeck explores the works of composer Gustav Mahler; in particular his celebrated Adagietto, the fourth movement of his fifth symphony. Composed at a troubled time for the master, it features two sad yet ultimately uplifting pieces. In addition, the Ochestra will revisit Mozart with his Rondo in C Major, finishing up with a new concerto for violin and orchestra in the style of Klezmer. Conducted by Noah Bendix-Balgley.
Gustav Mahler, the great Austrian late-Romantic composer started out like many of his peers as a conductor; it wasn't until 1904, near the end of his life that his skills as a composer came to fruition following his Seventh Symphony work. Despite his success his life met various upheavals during this period; his daughter Maria died of scarlet fever and he himself was diagnosed with a serious heart disease which finally claimed his life in 1911.
