Celebrating Mozart's relationship with Prague
The "Mother Of Cities provide the inspiration for this exciting program of music, conducted by renowned Slovakian maestro Juraj Valcuha returns to Pittsburgh with works by Mozart, Smetana and Dvorak. Mozart's Symphony No. 38, which first premiered in 1787 opens the proceedings; Smetana's famous Moldau, is reminiscent of the famous river Vltava that flows through the city; two works by Dvorak include his Piano Concerto, last performed here 10 years ago and the sprightly Carnival Overture to finish off the evening. With special guest, pianist Francesco Piemontesi.
Mozart is known for his close association with the city of Prague, where a large portion of his fanbase were situated; in fact, his operas Don Giovanni and
a clemenza di Tito were first performed there in the city. In addition, the first performance of the "Prague" Symphony is rumored to have been written for his first visit there in the same year.
