The story is set in the Washington heights neighborhood of Manhattan in a blistering hot summer. We follows a cast of characters from three generations, all of whom have a different relationship to their heritage and contrasting feelings about the changes engulfing the neighbourhood. With its score incorporating rap, salsa and Sondheim, In the Heights is a dazzling display of Miranda's songwriting talents, and dynamic portrait of a community not often given a voice on the musical theatre stage.
