Why see Dreamgirls?

Live the Dream in 2017....

After its hit run on Broadway and subsequent national tour in 2009, Pittsburgh Cultual Centre present their full staging of super-hit musical Dreamgirls, that first hit the Great White Way in 1981; it also spawned a movie adaptation starring Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson, winning the latter an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Follow the triumph and torment of show business is examined in this musical about a Supremes-like female singing group that fights its way to the top amidst turmoil, jealousy and conflict. The soaring Motown score includes "Steppin' to the Bad Side" "Cadillac Car" and "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going."

What is it about?

Hopeful singing talents Deena Jones, Lorrell Robinson and Effie White are performing as The Dreamettes, when ambitious agent Curtis Taylor, Jr. discovers them. Landing them a job as backup singers for the soul and rock 'n' roll sensation James 'Thunder' Early, he smartly begins to mold their rising career. However Deena and Effie come to blows when the former is lauded as the group's star for her beauty, rather than the full-figured Effie, and the dream threatens to unravel as fast as it began.

The uplifting yet troubled story of Dreamgirls has continue to resonate with audiences from 1980s Broadway to 21st century Hollywood, introducing some legendary breakthrough performances along the way. Pittburgh's brand-new production promises to provide the show-stopping numbers and engaging story-telling that the city's audiences have come to expect.

Dreamy!

Dreamgirls, we all know the show, or we have seen the movie....or we have at least heard Jennifer Hudson belt that song. These Dreams are a powerhouse trio, even after the group changes leads. Youth, greed, desire, jealousy, abuse, redemption, forgiveness, is all here on display and Pittsburgh Musical Theater's production has it moving along the stage while your toes are tapping along to the infectious sounds of 60's R&B. The costumes are one sparkly eye catcher after another, Tony Sirk (costumer), must have had his hands full, getting all of these costumes together! And speaking of having their hands full, Wig Designer- Christopher Patrick and Wig Master- Ricky Gindlesberger, I was trying to count how many wigs were in this show, and I lost count somewhere after 55. One change was literally seconds, I have no idea how they did it. I wish PMT shows were longer runs, this one surely deserves it! This show plays on PMT strengths. Great singers & actors, and a reasonably priced seat. ... Read more
