DISAPPOINTED

Although I had fantastic seats, I had trouble understanding the words to the songs. If I had not previously seen the movie, I wouldn’t have been able to follow the story at all. I also felt the sets were dark and less than creative. I’ve seen other musical shows at the Civic Center with exceptionally creative and wonderful sets. The sets in this production were sorely lacking. The orchestra was very good. The revolution battle sound effects were very good. I’ve seen this done as two different movies. I felt this stage production vulgar and lacking. I definitely would not recommend it for children.

THIRD TIME IS THE WORST.

I’ve seen Les Mis three times over the years. The show is one of my favorites. Unfortunately the sound quality and pitchy tone of the performers easily makes this the worst rendition I’ve seen. I’m not sure if the poor performance was due to it being the second show of the day, but this was definitely not Broadway quality. The best singers were the children. I feel cheated.

LES MISERABLES 2019 TOUR IS JUST AWFUL

I have seen this play several times and marvel at the different creative choices of each production company. Unfortunately, the directors for this version absolutely ruined this play. I was told (whilst complaining) that the dark lighting was a director's choice to bring "more grit and a freshness" to the play. The lighting choice made it difficult to see the performances. The actor's aren't just singing, they are performing and there are facial expressions and gestures that aid the storing telling-- 100% of that is lost here. You can barely see the actors. No admiring the sets. No admiring the costumes. No astonishment over the grand spectacular of live theater. Save your money and stream the sound track while you let moonlight stream through your blinds. The story is too complex for this kind of lighting. It would work in a smaller more intimate theater and a more streamlined plot. I just thought it was awful. Sorry I wasted the money and the time going to this version.

DISAPPOINTING

Friday, April 19 was a disappointing evening. It was my 7th (or 8th?) performance of Lez Miz. The actors were suitable, but their performance fell short of previous shows I've seen in both Boston and NYC. The staging was adequate but was lacking in terms of the circular, revolving stage in older performances. Les Miz is a remarkable piece of theater. Les Miz Boston 2019 was a mere shadow of the original: reinterpreted scenes (Valjean's death scene; Empty Chairs; Turning; etc.) Friends who have seen the new production agree with me. One final note: the decorum of the audience that night was deplorable. I had the feeling with were at a rock concert with the shouting, cheering, whooping.

MISERABLE

Sentimental and lacking. Paper thin characters who don't convince. No amount of lighting, pretty theatrical sets or great singing can help a musical which has lost its direction. The characters don't change, the lyrics are hard to understand, the story is misshapen, spanning decades in a confusing time-line. We sat up close and it didn't help. My family all agreed. Victor Hugo would have walked out if he could. I only wish I had paid for bad seats so I could not be so close to such poor drama. Maybe the original production was better, but not this touring version.

LE MISERABLE

I’ve seen high school productions better then this bogus Le Miserables production at Bass Concert Hall in Austin on 9/14/19. My daughter purchased 6 tickets for all of us. We drove up from Houston and we were excited to see it again. Seeing it will be your problem. It was a true mystery production. The lighting was so bad that you will be left guessing who is doing/singing what throughout the show. Don’t waste your time or money! You will be very disappointed like we were.

SAVE YOUR MONEY

Les Mis is a classic show, but this production is a failure. Sure, I've seen it multiple times and love the turntable stage, so I am comparing it, but this latest rendition doesn't even begin to compare. We saw it in Austin at the Bass Concert Hall on 9/10/2019. My wife was new to the show and I'm sad that this was the one she got to see. The leads are great in solos when their volume is up, but otherwise the orchestra drowns them out, the lighting is terrible, almost impossible to tell who is singing when multiple people are on stage, and god forbid you want to understand what anyone is actually saying. It's unintelligible in group acts. Not sure what was up with the TV sized monitors mounted on the front of the first balcony, but it glowed like a TV in a living room late at night, illuminating the audience from behind. Save your money and buy the 25th anniversary DVD.
